Current Activities

Many of the activities between 1999 and 2004 (Phase 1) focussed on solar home systems (SHS). Following feedback from the target audience, the aims and objectives for 2004-2009 (Phase 2) are to build on previous work, primarily looking at the non-technical issues of PV deployment in developing countries:

Support and Co-operation: continued from phase 1. This activity will ensure dialogue between IEA PVPS members and donors and highlight major donor PV projects and opportunities for use of PV (e.g. in rural development).

PV for rural electrification and poverty alleviation: This will focus on the role of PV in the provision of water, health, education and ICT services, PV battery charging stations, hybrids and village mini-grids.

PV Power packs and Power plants for grid support: This subtask will evaluate the techno-economic aspects of PV Power Packs and Grid support applications in developing countries.

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and PV applications: Many developing countries are looking to the CDM to help leverage funding to achieve sustainable economic development. The work will result in updated information on the opportunities for PV project developers and governments in developing countries arising from the CDM process.
