Welcome!

This website aims to highlight UK activity in the field of photovoltaics (solar electricity) and in particular the United Kingdom's participation within the International Energy Agency's Photovoltaic Power Systems (PVPS) Programme.

PVPS is a collaborative R&D Agreement involving 23 countries, all of them members of the IEA. Since its establishment in 1993, PVPS participants have been conducting a variety of joint projects with the goal of enabling photovoltaic solar energy to become a significant renewable energy source in the near future.

This goal requires that PV users and choosers have access to reliable information on PV systems' performance, design guidelines, planning methods, etc. PVPS aims to achieve this goal by adopting the following objectives:

  • Contribute to cost reduction (more...)
  • Increase awareness of PV potential and value (more...)
  • Foster PV market deployment by removing technical and non-technical barriers (more...)
  • Enhance technology co-operation with non-IEA countries (more...)

The PVPS programme provides a pool of international expertise and experience and a valuable mechanism with which to identify and overcome common problems in an efficient and cost-effective manner. For the UK, participation in PVPS provides access to a wealth of practical international experiences - both good and bad - on critical aspects of PV implementation, from network integration of systems to programmes and policies for promoting PV technology. Participation assists the UK to resolve the key issues that will help move the technology as rapidly as possible towards more cost-effective applications at home, and more reliable operation worldwide.

The participation of all UK experts within PVPS is supported by the Department For Trade and Industry (DTI).

The Department for International Development (DfID) also supports experts' participation specifically under the PVPS activity 'Cooperation with Developing Countries'.
